MRC McLean Hazel has a wide range of experience in urban design, streetscape and place-making projects. Prof. George Hazel is a past president of The Urban Design Alliance (UDAL) and Peter Dickinson was involved in the preparation and presentation of the Department for Transport’s Manual for Streets through the Institution of Highways and Transportation.
- Sutton Town Centre. MRC McLean Hazel was commissioned by the London Borough of Sutton to assist in the development of a strategy for improvement of the public space and urban realm in the town centre. An analytical overview of the existing space was undertaken and potential improvements were developed through an in-depth stakeholder workshop. Key needs identified include better pedestrian and cycling facilities, more “exchange space” and improvement of transverse links across the linear town centre.
- CABE/IHT Urban Design Training. In association with CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) and the Institution of Highways & Transportation, MRC McLean Hazel co-ordinated and facilitated a series of focussed training workshops for highway & transportation professionals on urban design.
- Urban Design London seminars. MRC McLean Hazel has presented a series of seminars for Urban Design London. The emphasis was on the value and principles of good urban design which included aspects such as why good design matters, what makes places successful spaces and how good design can promote economic growth, build social capital and improve health and well-being.
- Design Awareness Training. This is an initiative being promoted by the Scottish Government’s Improvement Service. MRC McLean Hazel is contributing roads, traffic and transport input to the training modules which are provided to Scottish Local Authority officers and members.
- Edinburgh College of Art lectures. Andy Watt currently provides a course on transportation to post-graduate Urban Design students in the Department of Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art (eca). This involves looking at urban design from a transport perspective and seeking solutions that balance the desires and demands of urban living.
